Held at the University of KwaZulu-Natal in Durban, South Africa, COY7 had a large number of participants from all over the world, with a large number of local South African delegates and students from UKZN engaged in the conference as well. Keynote speakers included Kumi Naidoo and Bill McKibben. With three streams of workshops over three days, there were many opportunities to form connections between international youth and learn new skills to apply both to activities at the COP as well as to take back home to build domestic youth climate movements. COY7 was organised by an international working group, many of whom had worked on previous COYs, and a team of local students from UKZN. All this was achieved with a minimal budget of USD$3000, with the majority of that going towards venue and equipment hire. COY7 was made into a “climate-positive” event by emitting as little as possible and capturing more CO2 through tree planting around the world than the event would emit.
